The Quilter's Cutting Duo

Two tools. One mission: perfectly squared, cleanly cut quilt blocks every time. The Quilter's Cutting Duo pairs the Madam Sew 12.5" Square-Up Quilting Ruler with the 45mm Rotary Cutter — the two tools you reach for every time you sit down to work on a quilt.

The square ruler is purpose-built for the most common task in quilting: squaring up finished blocks before assembly. With bold alignment lines at 6.5", 8.5", 9.5", and 10.5" built directly into the ruler, it automatically accounts for the ¼" seam allowance needed for 6", 8", 9", and 10" blocks — no mental maths, no re-measuring. The 45mm rotary cutter cuts through single or multiple fabric layers cleanly in one pass, with an ergonomic handle suited to both right and left-handed quilters.

Whether you're trimming half-square triangles or squaring up your first twelve-inch block, this duo handles both jobs precisely and efficiently.

Why You'll Love It

• Purpose-Built for the Most Common Quilting Task — The 12.5" square ruler was designed specifically for squaring up quilt blocks — the single most repeated task before quilt assembly. Every marking on this ruler exists for a reason, with no confusing extras to navigate.
• Seam Allowance Already Built In — The bold alignment lines at 6.5", 8.5", 9.5", and 10.5" automatically give you the ¼" seam allowance needed for 6", 8", 9", and 10" finished blocks. Line up your block, trim, and you're done.
• Read Markings on Any Fabric Colour — The transparent matte finish and bold, clear markings are readable on both light and dark fabrics — a deliberate design choice that most competing rulers don't make.
• The 45mm Cutter Is the All-Purpose Quilting Standard — Large enough to cut through multiple fabric layers efficiently, nimble enough for curves and smaller pieces, with an ergonomic symmetrical handle that works for right and left-handed quilters equally.
• Two Tools That Were Designed to Work Together — The 12.5" square ruler positions your block; the rotary cutter makes the trim in one smooth, confident pass. No stopping to reposition, no second-guessing the seam allowance.

1. 12.5" Square-Up Quilting Ruler

• Size: 12.5" × 12.5" × ⅛" thick
• Material: Durable acrylic plastic with smooth laser-cut edge
• Finish: Anti-slip coating; transparent matte technology for readability on light and dark fabrics
• Markings:
  • Full ⅛" measurement grid across the entire surface
  • Bold alignment lines at 6.5", 8.5", 9.5", and 10.5" (incorporating ¼" seam allowance for 6", 8", 9", and 10" finished blocks)
  • The full 12.5" square incorporates the ¼" seam allowance for a 12" finished block
  • Bold 45° diagonal line for squaring up half-square triangles
• Use: Squaring up quilt blocks (all popular sizes up to 12"); squaring up half-square triangles; general measuring and marking
• Note: Ruler intended for marking and measuring; use with a rotary cutter on a cutting mat — do not use as a cutting guide with craft knives

2. Rotary Cutter — 45mm

• Blade size: 45mm — the all-purpose quilting standard for straight cuts, gentle curves, and multi-layer cutting
• Material: SKS-7 tungsten steel blade; plastic loop handle with integrated grip ridges
• Length: 7⅝ inches
• Features: Symmetrical ergonomic handle for right and left-handed use; sliding blade guard for safety; hanging hole in handle
• Use: Cutting single or multiple layers of cotton, felt, wool, fleece, vinyl, leather; straight strips, quilt blocks, binding, curves
• Safety: Always engage blade guard when not in use; always cut away from body; use only with a cutting mat

1. Complete your quilt block. Press all seams flat before squaring up — a well-pressed block squares up more accurately than an unpressed one.
2. Identify the block size you need. For a 12" finished block, use the full 12.5" ruler edge. For smaller blocks, use the bold alignment lines: 6.5" for a 6" block, 8.5" for an 8" block, 9.5" for a 9" block, 10.5" for a 10" block. These lines already include the ¼" seam allowance.
3. Position the ruler on your block. Place the square ruler over the block, aligning the bold line for your target size with the seam lines or edges of your block. The transparent matte surface lets you see fabric and markings underneath clearly.
4. Trim the first two sides. Place the block on your cutting mat. With the ruler positioned correctly, use the 45mm rotary cutter to trim along two adjacent ruler edges in one clean pass each. Always cut away from your body, pressing firmly but smoothly — the tungsten blade requires minimal pressure.
5. Rotate and trim the remaining two sides. Turn the block 180° and re-align the ruler. Trim the two remaining edges. The block is now squared to the exact size with the ¼" seam allowance built in.
6. For half-square triangles. Use the bold 45° diagonal line on the ruler to align the triangle seam with the diagonal, then trim the edges to square up the unit accurately.
