Every quilter reaches a point where the basics click — and the right tools are what get you there. The Quilting Essentials Kit brings together six of Madam Sew's most trusted tools: a 100% wool pressing mat, replacement rotary blades, a seam guide ruler, sewing clips, a ruler grip, and heat erasable marking pens.
Together, they cover the four things you do in every quilting session: press, cut, mark, and hold. No more hunting down tools one by one. This bundle gives you what experienced quilters reach for every time they sit down at the machine.
It's a great next step after the Starter Kit — and an even better gift for an intermediate quilter who's ready to level up.
Why You'll Love It
- Crisp Seams Start with the Right Surface — The 100% New Zealand wool pressing mat absorbs and radiates iron heat from both sides at once, giving you noticeably flatter, sharper seams with fewer passes of the iron — something a standard ironing board simply can't replicate.
- Five Fresh Blades Mean Five Projects of Perfect Cutting — Sharp blades aren't just faster, they're safer. The SKS-7 tungsten steel replacement blades glide through multiple fabric layers, felt, and vinyl without pressing hard or skipping, so you cut accurately every time.
- Move Your Ruler Without Moving Your Fingers — The Ruler Grip's suction cup attaches firmly to any smooth quilting ruler, letting you reposition it cleanly and keep your fingers well away from the rotary blade — a small tool with a big safety payoff.
- Set Your Seams. Mark Your Lines. Erase Them Clean. — The Seam Guide Ruler sets accurate seam allowances from ⅛" to 2", while the heat erasable pens let you mark cutting lines, quilting designs, and pivot points freely, then iron them away when you're done.
- Six Tools That Work Better Together — This is a complete cutting, pressing, marking, and holding system for the serious quilter — each tool designed to support the others throughout your entire project workflow.
1. Wool Pressing Mat
- Material: 100% felted New Zealand wool
- Size: 17" × 13.5"
- Thickness: Approx. ½"
- Features: Naturally fire-resistant; absorbs and radiates iron heat for pressing from both sides simultaneously; textured surface grips fabric to prevent stretching and puckering
- Use: Pressing seams, quilt blocks, hems, appliqué, patchwork, embroidery; replaces ironing board for tabletop pressing
- Includes: Reusable transparent vinyl storage pouch with snap closure
- Note: Steam and moisture may seep through mat — protect wood or delicate surfaces underneath; natural wool may have slight odor when wet (normal)
- Cleaning: Blot stains with white vinegar solution (¼ cup vinegar + 2 cups lukewarm water); do not machine wash
2. Rotary Cutter Blades — 45mm, 5-pack
- Quantity: 5 blades per pack
- Blade size: 45mm
- Material: SKS-7 tungsten steel; precision-ground edge
- Compatibility: Fits most major brand rotary cutters including Fiskars, Olfa, Clover, and Madam Sew
- Features: Numerical demarcations on each wheel blade; designed to outlast conventional carbon-steel blades
- Use: Cutting multiple layers of fabric, felt, vinyl, leather; the 45mm is the all-purpose size suited for straight cuts, curves, and general quilting
- Installation: Unscrew center hub, remove dull blade, slip in new blade, replace hub
3. Seam Guide Ruler + Magnetic Seam Guide
- Material: Sturdy transparent plastic (ruler); steel with strong magnet (seam guide)
- Ruler dimensions: 5½" × 2½"
- Color: Fluorescent yellow-green
- Markings: 16 needle holes for seam allowances ⅛" to 2"; 45° trim line; ¼" pivot marking cross; ¼" and ½" side measurement lines
- Magnetic Seam Guide: Approx. ½" × 2", 1.09 oz; attaches to metal needle plate
- Compatible with: Most household sewing machines with metal needle plates; works best for seams ¼" and wider
- Includes printed user instructions
4. Sewing Clips — Multicolor, 50 pcs
- Quantity: 50 clips per box
- Dimensions per clip: 1" long × ⅜" wide; opens to ½"
- Colors: Red, orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, purple
- Material: Plastic body with steel spring (contains nickel)
- Features: Raised round teeth; flat back and sides; seam allowance markings at ¼", ⅜", and 3/16"
- Use: Binding, hemming, clipping quilt layers; pin-free alternative on laminate, leather, vinyl, silk, satin
5. Ruler Grip — Ruler Handle with Suction Cup
- Material: Plastic handle, rubber suction cup
- Dimensions: Suction cup diameter 2¼"; handle height 2½"
- Attaches to: Any smooth-surface quilting ruler or template via strong suction cup
- Features: Locking handle mechanism; removable and repositionable between rulers; stores flat in unlocked position
- Use: Safe, firm grip while cutting with a rotary cutter; keeps fingers clear of blade; easy ruler repositioning while marking and measuring
- Note: Requires clean, dust-free ruler surface for suction to hold; does not attach to slotted rulers
6. Heat Erasable Fabric Marking Pens + Refills
- Quantity: 4 pens (white, black, red, blue) + 4 free refills (1 per color)
- Tip: 0.7mm fine point; 0.35mm line width
- Ink type: Heat-erasable gel
- Erasing method: Iron at minimum 180°F/80°C; or hairdryer/tumble dryer on high heat
- Use on nearly all fabrics; test on scrap first; extra care with silk
- Store tip-down, tightly capped; use within 5 months of purchase
- Comes in carrying pouch with pocket-clip pen caps
- Press your seams on the wool mat. Place the mat on a flat, heat-resistant surface near your machine. Press quilt blocks, seams, and hems directly on the mat — the dense wool radiates heat back through your fabric for flat, crisp results with fewer passes. Protect wood surfaces from steam seeping through.
- Mark cutting lines and seam positions with the heat erasable pens. Choose your pen color (white for dark fabrics; red, blue, or black for lighter ones). Mark directly on fabric — the lines stay visible as long as you need them. When done, press with a hot iron at 180°F/80°C minimum to erase completely.
- Attach the Ruler Grip to your quilting ruler. Clean both the ruler surface and the suction cup with a damp cloth. Pull the grip handles open, press the suction cup firmly onto the ruler, and close the handle to lock. Grip the handle to move the ruler precisely — and to keep your fingers safely away from the blade.
- Set your seam allowance with the Seam Guide Ruler. Place it on your needle plate under the presser foot, lower your needle into the hole matching your target seam width, then press the Magnetic Seam Guide against the ruler. Remove the ruler — the magnet stays as your sewing guide.
- Clip fabric layers in place. Push sewing clips open wide and place along fabric edges — just as you would a pin, but faster and without the prick. Use the base markings to clip consistently at your chosen seam allowance.
- Cut with fresh rotary blades. When your current blade begins to skip or drag, swap in a new 45mm tungsten steel blade: unscrew the center hub, remove the dull blade, insert the new one, and replace the hub. A sharp blade requires far less pressure — and is much safer.
- Replace blades and pen cartridges as needed. Keep this bundle working at full capacity by swapping in fresh pen refills (tip-down storage extends their life) and rotating blades before they drag.
