How To Make A Log Cabin Block

How To Make A Log Cabin Block

The Log Cabin block- a popular block pattern in the quilting community. This is a very versatile block when it comes to picking your fabrics and designing your project. With the amount of pieces needed, it looks intimidating but sews up super easy and fast. Perfect for a beginner to take on :) Follow along and make your own!

Materials Needed:

3 coordinating fabrics- light (A), medium (B) and dark (C)

Start by taking your medium fabric (B) and cut a 3 ⅞” x 3 ⅞” square. Then line it up along the diagonal lines on your rotary mat and cut the square into 2 triangles. Set one triangle aside, you’ll only need 1 triangle out of the medium fabric. Repeat this step and cut a triangle out of your light fabric (A).

Now take your light fabric (A) and cut 4 pieces (one of each) measuring 2” x 3 ½”, 2” x 5”, 2” x 6 ½”, and 2 x 8”.

Take your dark fabric (C) and cut 4 pieces (one of each) measuring- 2” x 5”, 2” x 6 ½”, 2” x 8”, and 2” x 9 ½”.

Now that you have all your pieces, it’s time to sew it all together.

Take your light and medium triangles and put them right sides together, matching your raw edges. Sew them together using the ¼” piecing foot with guide. Make sure the medium fabric is on the right hand side of the square you just made. Press the seam towards the medium fabric

Now take the 2” x 3 ½” light fabric piece, and sew it to the right side of the square using a ¼” seam. Press the seam to the right.

Take the 2” x 5” pieces, both light and dark fabric, and sew the light piece to the top and the dark piece to the bottom of the block using ¼” seams. Press the new seams towards the top and bottom.

Now take the 2” x 6 ½” pieces, both light and dark fabric, and sew the light piece to the right side and the dark piece to the left side of the block. Use clips or pins to hold the strips in place while you sew. Press the new seams to the left and right sides.

Take the 2” x 8” pieces, both light and dark, and sew the light piece to the top and the dark piece to the bottom of the block. Use clips or pins to hold the strips in place while you sew. Press the new seams towards the top and bottom.

Take the last piece, 2” x 9 ½”, and sew it to the left side of the block. Use clips or pins to hold it in place while you sew. Press the seam to the left.

And you’re done! Let us know in the comments what project you’ll use this style of block in :)
