How to Use the Applique Foot
The art of appliqué is to take a shaped piece of fabric and attach it to a backing piece, both with the right sides facing.
Appliqué is often seen as an embellishment in quilting or on clothing. Think patched pockets on jeans for example.
You will need:
Pins or bonding material Appliqué material ready cut to shape Base or backing fabric An adhesive material similar to bondaweb is an optional element, to hold the appliqué to the base fabric before sewing in place, or you could simply pin in place.
Preparing your appliqué shape
Once you have decided on the shape, a heart or flower for example this need to be cut out from your appliqué fabric. Sharp scissors, a roller blade or and cutting system for complex designs. You can even purchase pre-cut applique pieces.
IF you are using an adhesive material this is the time to press it onto the reverse of the appliqué, peel off the backing paper and position the appliqué as you wish.
Either pin or press into place, if using the adhesive, to temporarily hold the fabric together.
Sewing The Applique
Once you have prepared the appliqué pieces place the foot onto the sewing machine and attach using the simple clip on bar.
The foot is clear so you can see exactly where you are sewing, which is critical for an even stitch around your appliqué pieces.
Select a wide zig zag stitch, with a very short stitch length, this gives a good compact stitch, similar to satin stitch. Or if you prefer you can select a decorative stitch for an unusual and pretty border to you appliqué.
Keeping the outer edge of the appliqué fabric aligned to the opening of the toe, slightly to the right of centre, simply sew around the edge of the appliqué piece.
Top Tip: Go slow as you stitch around any curves and remember to stop, drop the needle, raise the presser foot and pivot around sharp corners. Don't forget to lower the presser foot again when you are ready to begin sewing.
